These methods are used for surveying insects.
- Pitfall traps – best for surveying beetles and ground dwelling insects.
- Sweep netting – best for areas with long grass.
- Moth trapping – best for surveying moths and other nocturnal insects.
- Tree beating – best for areas with trees and bushes.
These methods are used for surveying freshwater habitats.
- Pond dipping – best for ponds. Also a common activity for working with children.
- Kick surveying – best for streams and small rivers.
