Cohort 4 In-person event – Dalkeith

May 13, 2024 @ 9:30 am - 4:00 pm

This in-person event will be at Newbattle Abbey College Grounds in Dalkeith. We’ll be starting at 10am and are aiming to be finished by 4pm.

We will spend the morning with Szymon Szyszczakiewicz, biologist, educator, and the founder Foragerium. As part of a walk, Szymon will share his knowledge on plants and fungi and how he supports people to connect with nature.

After lunch we will practice our butterfly identification skills. This can be useful if you decide to participate in this year’s Big Butterfly Count organised by Butterfly Conservation. Doing such wildlife surveys in your community can help to connect with local nature as well as people.

We will also join Rebecca Lewis, Senior Conservation Officer of Buglife to learn some of the practical skills provided by the Riverflies Project. This project trains and supports community groups to monitor their local rivers for various invertebrates to contribute to national conservation efforts. Who knows, maybe you will end up organising a dedicated group to protect freshwaters in your area.
